Gold is one of the few commodities that almost everyone owns without ever thinking of themselves as an investor. A wedding band, a broken chain at the back of a drawer, a coin passed down from a grandparent — each of these contains gold, and each has a value that most people cannot pin down beyond a vague "gold is expensive right now." This guide gives you the mental model behind that number. The idea is not to make you a dealer, but to make you literate enough that nobody can take advantage of you. When a "cash for gold" counter quotes a price, they are quoting some percentage of melt value — whether you can recognize that percentage is the difference between a fair deal and a costly one. Pure gold, chemically, is an element — the symbol Au in the periodic table, from the Latin aurum. But pure gold is also soft. A ring made of 100% gold would bend out of shape within weeks of daily wear. That is why nearly all gold jewelry and most gold coins are alloys: gold mixed with other metals such as copper, silver, nickel, and zinc, which add hardness and change the color. The karat system expresses how much of that alloy is gold, measured in 24 parts. Twenty-four karat (24K) means pure gold. Eighteen karat (18K) means 18 parts gold out of 24, or 75%. Fourteen karat (14K) means 14/24, or 58.3%. The fraction is the purity: divide the karat number by 24 to get the proportion of gold by weight. A common shorthand is the fineness scale used across Europe, which counts parts per thousand: 24K is 999 (or 999.9 for "four nines" fine gold), 22K is 916, 18K is 750, 14K is 585, 10K is 417, and 9K is 375.
Regulation matters here. In the United States, the FTC's Jewelry Guides and the rules at 16 CFR Part 23 require quality marks on gold jewelry to be accurate, and they set the legal minimum for something sold as "gold" jewelry at 10 karat [ftc-jewelry][ecfr-part23]. Below that, an item is not legally gold jewelry — it is gold-plated or gold-filled. Understanding the stamp is the first step of valuation: the same 10 grams of metal is worth dramatically more as 18K than as 10K, and a piece stamped "GP" (gold plated) has essentially no gold value at all.

Precious metals are weighed in troy ounces, a system that survived from medieval trade and that is now enshrined in the way bullion, spot prices, and coin specifications are quoted worldwide [nist-si].
The two ounces are different sizes. A troy ounce weighs exactly 31.1034768 grams. An avoirdupois ounce weighs 28.349523125 grams. The troy ounce is about 9.7% heavier. That difference is small enough to be invisible on a kitchen scale but large enough to matter enormously in a gold transaction. If a dealer quotes you a per-gram price built from a per-troy-ounce spot price, dividing by 28.35 instead of 31.10 will understate the value of your gold by that same 9.7% — a quiet but real adjustment that favors the buyer.
The troy system also includes the pennyweight (dwt), equal to 1/20 of a troy ounce or 1.55517384 grams, which is a common unit in the jewelry trade, and the troy pound of 12 troy ounces. None of these should be confused with their avoirdupois namesakes. Gold's market price, called the spot price, is the benchmark for one troy ounce of unallocated, good-delivery gold. Spot also connects the metal to the broader economy. The U.S. Geological Survey tracks gold's role as both a commodity and a store of value, reporting mine production, reserves, and the massive above-ground stock that makes gold fundamentally different from a metal like copper, which is largely consumed and discarded [usgs-gold]. Because nearly all the gold ever mined still exists, supply is inelastic, and price is driven far more by demand — jewelry, electronics, and above all investment and central-bank buying — than by any annual production figure.
Melt value is the dollar value of the pure gold inside an item, priced at spot. It is the objective, reproducible number at the center of every gold transaction, and it is the number the Gold Value Calculator computes. The calculation is two steps: find the pure gold content, then price it.
First, convert the item's weight to grams and multiply by the purity fraction (karat divided by 24):

Where mtotal is the item's total weight, k is the karat mark, 31.1035 is the grams in a troy ounce, and Pspot is the spot price. This is the definition of melt value as the industry understands it [investopedia-melt].
A worked example makes the arithmetic concrete. Suppose you have a 14K gold chain weighing 10 grams, and spot is $3,000 per troy ounce. Purity is 14/24 = 0.5833, so pure gold is 10 × 0.5833 = 5.83 grams. Convert to troy ounces: 5.83 ÷ 31.1035 = 0.1875 ozt. Multiply by the spot price: 0.1875 × $3,000 = $562.50 of melt value (the exact calculator output is $562.64, since the conversion uses more decimal places than the rounded example). If a dealer offers $450, they are offering about 80% of melt — which the premium/discount field in the calculator expresses directly as −20%.
The same chain worth checking is the one in the other direction: a 1-ounce American Gold Eagle is stamped 22K, but the U.S. Mint alloys it so the coin contains exactly one troy ounce of pure gold. Its melt value at the same $3,000 spot is therefore $3,000 regardless of its karat stamp, because the weight in troy ounces already encodes the pure content. This is the classic case where karat alone misleads — the coin's karat is about the alloy's makeup, not about how much gold the coin contains.
Bullion — the investment form of gold — comes in standardized weights that make comparison easy. Coins are usually specified in troy ounces, and bars in grams or kilograms. The table below lists common items and their pure gold content.

Two things stand out. First, the three famous one-ounce coins — Eagle, Maple Leaf, and Krugerrand — are exactly equivalent in gold content (one troy ounce of pure gold), so at equal spot prices their melt values are identical; differences in their retail prices come from mintage, demand, and dealer premiums, not from metal content. Second, the jump from coins to bars is not a jump in purity — all these are effectively fine gold — but a jump in denomination, which is why bars carry proportionally lower manufacturing premiums per ounce. Knowing the melt value is not the same as knowing what you will be paid. The gap between the two is where the real-world economics live. A scrap dealer buys your gold, assays it, refines it or resells it, and needs to cover those costs plus a margin — so offers typically land at 70–90% of melt. This is not a hidden cheat; it is the same spread a used-car dealer applies when buying a car wholesale and selling it retail. What matters is that you know the benchmark (melt value) so you can judge the offer as a percentage.
For bullion the picture inverts. When you buy a coin or bar, you pay a premium over spot — typically 2–8% for popular bullion, more for low-mintage or collector coins, which can trade at multiples of their metal value for numismatic reasons. The gold content sets the floor; collector demand sets the ceiling. The same principle applies to jewelry: a designer piece or an antique with provenance can be worth far more as an object than as metal, but the melt value tells you what you would get the day you sold it for scrap.
The practical workflow for selling scrap jewelry is short: read the stamp, weigh the item, look up spot, and run the melt calculation. Then multiply by what you believe is a fair recovery percentage (80–90% is typical at reputable dealers) to set your expectation. Getting three quotes and comparing them as percentages of melt — not as raw dollar amounts, which depend on your item's weight — is the single most effective negotiation tactic, because it neutralizes the spread and forces dealers to compete on the same metric. When you weigh the item, do not include gemstones or non-gold findings in the weight, and be aware that a very worn piece contains less gold than its stamp implies, since gold wears away slowly over decades of use.
Confusing troy and avoirdupois ounces. This is the most expensive single error in gold valuation. Weighing a coin on a kitchen scale that reads "ounces" and treating the result as troy ounces overstates your gold content by 9.7%. Conversely, converting spot to a per-gram figure by dividing by 28.35 instead of 31.10 understates it. Always identify the unit before trusting any number.
Trusting the karat stamp on plated items. "14K GP" and "14K GEP" mean gold-plated or gold-electroplated — a microscopic layer of gold over base metal. "Gold-filled" (stamped as a fraction like 1/20 14K) has a bonded layer that contains real, recoverable gold, but far less than solid 14K of the same weight. Only solid-gold items (and to a much lesser degree, gold-filled ones) have meaningful melt value.
Ignoring stones and findings. A ring that weighs 6 grams including a large diamond is not 6 grams of gold. The diamond is not part of the metal and is not included in melt — removing it before weighing, or at least excluding its weight, changes the result materially.
Treating melt value as the offer. Melt value is a floor for the metal, not for a payout. Expecting 100% of melt at a scrap counter, or being surprised that bullion sells above spot, both stem from the same misunderstanding — that melt is a market price rather than a component of one.
Using stale spot prices. Gold moves intraday. A calculation based on yesterday's or last week's price can be off by more than the dealer's entire margin. For anything that matters, look up the current spot price at the moment you transact.
