Start with the karat selector. Choose the purity stamped on the item: 24K, 22K, 21K, 18K, 14K, 10K, or 9K. Next enter the weight and choose its unit. This is where the troy ounce trap lives. The Formula

Melt value is a two-step calculation: convert the alloy's weight to its pure gold content, then multiply by the spot price.

The intuition is straightforward: 18 karat is 18/24 = 75% gold, so an 18K chain contains three-quarters of its weight in gold and one-quarter in other metals. The pattern the chart makes obvious is that purity is the multiplier that separates a "gold-colored" item from a valuable one. Practical Tips

  1. Weigh before you go. A $15 jewelry scale that reads in grams and troy ounces pays for itself on the first visit to a dealer. Weigh with the item as-is, but know that stones and non-gold findings (clasps that are not marked) reduce the payable gold.
  2. Read the stamp correctly. "14K", "14kt", "585", and "0.585" all mean the same thing: 58.5% gold (European fineness marks use parts per thousand). "GEP" or "14K GP" means gold-plated — only a microscopic layer of gold — and the melt value is essentially zero.
  3. Spot is per troy ounce, always. If a dealer quotes you a per-gram price, divide the per-ounce spot by 31.1035, not 28.35. The 9.7% difference is a common "mistake" that quietly favors the buyer.

  7. Beware "cash for gold" mail-in offers. Shipping your gold away to an offer that arrives after you forfeit the item is a documented way to lose 30–50% of its value. Prefer a local, licensed dealer and a same-day transaction.

Limitations

Melt value is an estimate, not a price guarantee. It assumes your weight measurement is accurate and that the karat stamp is truthful — which the FTC requires, but which a corroded or recut item may not honor. Because gold is soft, worn jewelry loses weight over decades; a thin, worn band contains less gold than its original stamp suggests. The calculator also ignores that dealers buy at a discount and sell at a premium to cover refining costs and profit, so the number it produces is a floor for the metal, not a floor for a payout. Finally, spot prices fluctuate intraday and differ slightly between the London benchmark, COMEX futures, and retail dealer quotes, so treat any entered spot price as the best-known approximation for the moment you run the calculation.

For items with gemstones, enamel, or decorative work, no weight-based formula can capture the craftsmanship value — that is appraised separately. And for estate pieces, antique coins, or jewelry with provenance, the collectible market (numismatic or vintage) can dwarf the melt value entirely, which no calculator can model.
