About notAcalculator

Free, accurate, and accessible online calculators for everyone. Built with care, verified against authoritative sources.

Who We Are

notACalculator is a free online platform offering over 190 calculators across four categories: Financial, Fitness & Health, Math, and Other. We provide interactive tools for everything from mortgage payments and BMI to scientific notation and date calculations.

Our mission is simple: make accurate calculations accessible to anyone with an internet connection, without hidden costs, intrusive ads, or data collection. We believe the web should be a tool for empowerment, and accurate information should never be locked behind a paywall.

We are a small, independent team — developers and researchers who believe in transparent, well-sourced tools. We don't have a large editorial board or a team of PhDs. What we do have is a rigorous commitment to accuracy: every formula on this site traces back to its original authoritative source, and our code is open to scrutiny.

Why We Built This

The idea for notACalculator came from a simple observation: most online calculators fall short in one way or another. Some are behind paywalls. Others are riddled with ads, trackers, or outdated formulas. Many lack proper explanations, leaving users with a number but no understanding of how it was derived.

We set out to build something different: a comprehensive library of calculators that are not only free and accurate but also educational. Each calculator includes step-by-step explanations, the formulas behind the scenes, reference tables, and known limitations. We want you to understand not just the result, but the reasoning.

What started as a small collection of financial calculators has grown into a full-featured platform with tools for students, homeowners, fitness enthusiasts, healthcare professionals, and anyone who needs a quick, reliable calculation.

How We Work

Research-First Development

Every calculator starts with research. We identify the authoritative source for each formula — IRS publications for tax calculations, CDC and WHO guidelines for health metrics, ISO standards for mathematical conversions. The formula is then translated into code and tested against known values to verify correctness.

Open to Feedback

We don't hide behind opaque algorithms. Every formula on this site links directly to its authoritative source so you can verify the math yourself. If you find an error or have a suggestion, our contact page is open — we investigate and respond to every report.

Continuous Improvement

When we discover an error or an improvement, we fix it and document the change. Every page shows its last review date so you know the information is current. We maintain a public changelog of modifications to formulas and content.

Our Values

Accuracy First

Every formula is verified against authoritative sources and tested rigorously. We use well-established mathematical models from institutions like the CDC, NIH, IRS, and ISO standards. Our test suite runs hundreds of validations to catch regressions before they reach you.

Accessibility for All

We believe financial literacy, health awareness, and mathematical understanding should not require expensive software. Every calculator is built with keyboard navigation, screen reader support, and WCAG 2.1 AA accessibility guidelines. No registration, no paywalls, no barriers.

Privacy by Design

All calculations happen entirely in your browser. We never send your inputs to a server, never store personal data, and never track your calculations. No cookies are used by the calculators themselves. What you calculate stays with you.

Source-Verified Content

Each calculator includes detailed explanations, formulas, reference tables, and limitations. Every formula links directly to its authoritative source — IRS guidelines, CDC reports, NIH studies, ISO standards — so you can verify the information yourself.

Modern Technology, Thoughtful Experience

notACalculator is built with Next.js and React, using a modern component architecture that ensures fast load times, responsive layouts, and a consistent experience across devices. Every calculator is tested with automated unit and integration tests, and we run a full test suite before each deployment.

We use KaTeX for mathematical typesetting, presenting formulas in clean LaTeX notation so you can see exactly how results are computed. Our shared component library enforces consistent UI patterns, making the platform easy to navigate whether you are on a desktop, tablet, or phone.

Accessibility is a first-class concern. All interactive elements support keyboard navigation, screen readers, and focus management. We follow WCAG 2.1 AA guidelines and test with assistive technologies to ensure the platform is usable by everyone, regardless of ability.

Our Commitment to Privacy

Privacy is not a feature — it is a fundamental right. That is why every calculator on notACalculator runs entirely on your device. When you enter numbers into a calculator, that data never leaves your browser. There are no server-side computations, no analytics scripts tracking your inputs, and no third-party services processing your data.

We do not sell your information because we do not collect it in the first place. We do not require registration, email addresses, or any personal information to use any calculator on this site. The only data we collect is standard, anonymized traffic data (page views and basic browser information) used solely to improve the platform — and this data never includes your calculation inputs.

We use Google AdSense to display advertisements, which may use cookies to serve personalized ads based on your browsing history. You can control personalized advertising through Google's Ads Settings. We do not share your calculation data with advertisers — all calculations stay on your device. Your calculations are yours alone.

Rigorously Researched, Clearly Sourced

Every calculator on notACalculator is built on verified formulas sourced from authoritative institutions. Our financial calculators reference IRS guidelines, SEC regulations, and standard actuarial methods. Our health calculators use data from the CDC, NIH, WHO, and peer-reviewed medical literature. Our math calculators follow established mathematical conventions and ISO standards.

Each calculator page includes a References section that cites these sources directly, so you can verify the information and explore further. We never use calculator aggregators or competing calculator sites as sources — we go straight to the primary authority.

Our content is written and reviewed with the same rigor we apply to our code. Explanations are crafted to be clear and educational, not just descriptive. We highlight limitations and edge cases so you know when a calculator is the right tool for your situation and when it is not.
