Start by measuring the wall perimeter of your house — the total length of all exterior walls at the ground line, in feet. Walk the foundation and add the runs together; for most homes this is the same number your roof contractor calls the "eaves perimeter." Next, enter the average wall height. Most houses use 8- or 9-foot walls, but measure from the top of the foundation to the bottom of the soffit rather than trusting the ceiling height, because the siding actually covers that full band.
If your house has gable ends — the triangular walls under a peaked roof — select how many there are and enter the base width and height of one representative gable. The calculator uses half of base times height for each triangular gable, which is the standard geometry for a peaked end wall. Then enter the number of windows and doors. Here are three worked examples that cover the range of typical jobs.
Example 1 — A simple ranch. A 60-foot perimeter ranch with 10-foot walls, 3 windows, and 1 door needs 600 square feet of wall, minus 65 square feet of openings, for 535 net square feet. That is 5.35 squares, or 5.89 squares with the 10% allowance — a 6-square order. Siding usually ships two squares per box, so plan on 3 boxes.
Example 2 — A two-story with gables. A 100-foot perimeter two-story with 8-foot walls and two gable ends, each 30 feet wide and 8 feet tall, starts with 800 square feet of wall. The gables add 240 square feet, and 4 windows and 2 doors subtract 100, leaving 940 net square feet — 9.4 squares. With no waste that is 5 boxes; with 10% it rounds to 10.34 squares and 6 boxes.
Example 3 — A small cottage in metric. A cottage with an 18-meter perimeter and 2.5-meter walls, one 6-square-meter gable, 3 windows, and 1 door works out to 45 square meters of wall, minus 6.1 square meters of openings, for 44.9 net square meters. This is the job where the metric mode shines, since it reports the answer in the same square meters the local supplier quotes.
When in doubt about an irregular footprint, measure generously and let the waste allowance absorb the slack. A bay window or chimney chase that you did not subtract is rarely worth a trip back up the ladder once the truck has arrived.[certainteed]
Siding estimation is wall-area geometry with two adjustments. The wall area is the perimeter times the average wall height.

The weight column deserves attention before you choose. Measure the perimeter on foot, not from memory. Walk the foundation and add every exterior wall run. A dropped foot across a bay window or porch wall is exactly the kind of error that pushes an order over or under by a square.

Subtract openings you actually have. The 15-per-foot-window and 20-per-foot-door defaults are averages. A sliding glass door takes more than a standard entry door, so bump the count or treat large openings as an extra window-equivalent.
