If you have ever been surprised at checkout when a light but bulky pillow cost more to ship than a dense 5 lb (2.3 kg) book, you have met dimensional weight. Carriers — whether USPS in the United States, Royal Mail in the UK, La Poste in France, or DHL and FedEx worldwide — charge by whichever is greater: what the parcel actually weighs on a scale, or how much space it occupies in a truck or aircraft hold[wikipedia-dim-weight]. That space-based weight is called dimensional weight in North America and volumetric weight in most of the rest of the world, but the idea is identical[shopify-dim-weight].
The rule exists for a simple physical reason: a delivery van or cargo aircraft is limited by both mass and volume. A van that can legally carry 1,000 lb (454 kg) may fill up after only 600 lb (272 kg) if the parcels are large, light boxes. To recover the cost of that wasted space, carriers convert volume to a weight-equivalent and bill the higher of the two values[iata-cargo-manual]. For e-commerce sellers in Berlin shipping to Munich, for a student in São Paulo sending a care package to family, or for a small business in Mumbai fulfilling Etsy orders to the United States, the math is the same — only the divisor and the currency change.
This calculator estimates that billable weight and a practical cost range before you go to the carrier counter. It accepts both imperial and metric inputs — pounds and inches or kilograms and centimeters — and shows the result in both systems so a reader in Spain, India, or Chile can use it without converting by hand[nist-units]. The cost it shows is an estimate, not a carrier quote: real rates depend on origin, destination, service level, surcharges, and the carrier's current price list[usps-priority][usps-dmm-notice123]. Use the estimate to compare packaging options, decide whether to split a shipment, or sanity-check a checkout quote.

The calculator needs four numbers and one choice of units. Work through the example below, then try your own parcel.
Example — a sneaker box from a US retailer to a domestic address.
- Box: 14 in × 10 in × 6 in (35.6 cm × 25.4 cm × 15.2 cm)
- Actual weight: 3.2 lb (1.45 kg)
- Unit toggle: imperial (the calculator will also show the metric equivalent)
- Choose units. Select Imperial (lb, in) or Metric (kg, cm). The toggle at the top converts the input labels and the displayed equivalents. If you measure your box in centimeters in Paris, choose Metric; if you measure in inches in Ohio, choose Imperial — the formula accounts for the correct divisor either way[nist-units].
- Enter actual weight. Weigh the packed parcel on a kitchen or postal scale. Include the box, padding, and contents. In our example, 3.2 lb (1.45 kg).
- Enter length, width, and height. Measure the outside of the packed box at its longest points, rounding up to the next whole inch or centimeter — carriers round up[shopify-dim-weight]. Our box is 14 × 10 × 6 in.
- Press Calculate. The calculator shows dimensional weight, billable weight (the greater of the two), total volume, and an estimated cost range (economy vs express). For the sneaker box: volume = 840 cu in (13,764 cu cm), dimensional weight = 6.0 lb (2.7 kg) with divisor 139, so billable weight = 6.0 lb (2.7 kg). Even though the shoes weigh only 3.2 lb, you are billed for 6.0 lb of space.
Second example — a dense parcel where actual weight wins.
- Box: 8 in × 6 in × 4 in (20.3 cm × 15.2 cm × 10.2 cm)
- Actual weight: 5.0 lb (2.27 kg)
Volume = 192 cu in (3,147 cu cm). Dimensional weight = 1.4 lb (0.63 kg) imperial, 0.63 kg metric (divisor 5,000). Since 5.0 lb > 1.4 lb, billable weight = 5.0 lb (2.27 kg). Small, dense parcels are billed by scale weight; large, light parcels by dimensional weight.
Third example — metric input from the EU.
- Box: 40 cm × 30 cm × 20 cm (15.7 in × 11.8 in × 7.9 in)
- Actual weight: 2.0 kg (4.41 lb)
- Units: Metric, divisor 5,000 (standard for international air, IATA)[iata-cargo-manual]
Volume = 24,000 cu cm (1,464 cu in). Volumetric weight = 4.8 kg (10.6 lb). Billable = 4.8 kg — the box bills as more than double its scale weight.
Carriers publish dimensional weight as volume divided by a dimensional factor (often called the DIM divisor or volumetric divisor)[wikipedia-dim-weight]. The divisor encodes how many cubic units the carrier considers equivalent to one weight unit.
Let:
- L, W, H = length, width, height of the packed parcel
- V = L × W × H = volume
- D = divisor (carrier-specific)
- W_actual = scale weight
- W_dim = dimensional (volumetric) weight
Dimensional weight:
Common divisor values in use in 2026[wikipedia-dim-weight][shopify-dim-weight]:
- 139 in³/lb — FedEx and UPS domestic air and ground in the United States (most common for parcels originating in the US).
- 166 in³/lb — some USPS and international air services; also used by UPS/FedEx for certain international lanes.
- 5,000 cm³/kg — IATA standard for international air freight and most carriers outside the US (DHL, FedEx International, UPS International)[iata-cargo-manual].
- 6,000 cm³/kg — some European road freight and occasional e-commerce carrier tables.
Billable weight is the maximum of the two:
Because the divisor appears in the denominator, a smaller divisor produces a larger dimensional weight (stricter, more expensive for bulky parcels). Switching from 139 to 166 lowers the dimensional weight by about 16%; switching from 5,000 to 6,000 lowers it by about 17%.
Worked Step-Through (Imperial, Divisor 139)
Parcel: 14 in × 10 in × 6 in, actual 3.2 lb.
In metric (same box, 35.6 × 25.4 × 15.2 cm, divisor 5,000):
The two dimensional weights match after conversion: 6.04 lb ≈ 2.74 kg[nist-units] (1 lb = 0.453592 kg).

The table below fixes actual weight at 2.2 lb (1.0 kg) and varies box size to show when dimensional weight overtakes scale weight. All values use divisor 139 (imperial) / 5,000 (metric). Costs are the calculator's economy estimate in USD. A reader in the UK, EU, or India sees the same pattern in kilograms and centimeters shown alongside — the crossover point is identical.

The pattern is stark: a 6 in (15.2 cm) cube still bills by scale weight, but any box larger than about 10 × 8 × 6 in (25 × 20 × 15 cm) bills dimensionally even though it holds only 2.2 lb (1 kg) of product. For that same 1 kg parcel, the difference between a compact 6 in cube and a 24 × 18 × 12 in (61 × 45.7 × 30.5 cm) carton is a 17-fold increase in billable weight and roughly a 9-fold cost increase in this estimate — before fuel surcharges and residential fees.
- Shrink the box, not just the weight. Dimensional weight scales with volume, so the cheapest lever is often a smaller carton. Replacing a 12 × 10 × 8 in (30.5 × 25.4 × 20.3 cm) box with a 10 × 8 × 6 in (25.4 × 20.3 × 15.2 cm) one halves dimensional weight from 6.9 lb (3.15 kg) to 3.5 lb (1.57 kg) even though volume drops by only 50%.
- Split or combine intentionally. Two small parcels each under the dimensional threshold may bill by actual weight and together cost less than one large dimensional parcel — but two tracking numbers and two pickups add handling. Model both options with the calculator.
- Vacuum-compress and remove retail packaging. Air is what dimensional weight charges for. Shoes without the retail box, pillows vacuum-rolled, and apparel flat-packed can cut length or height by several inches (centimeters) and drop the billable weight by pounds (kilograms).
- Choose the right divisor for your lane. If you ship mostly domestic US ground/air, the calculator's default divisor 139 in³/lb (5,000 cm³/kg) is correct[wikipedia-dim-weight]. For USPS Ground Advantage to a distant zone or international air via IATA, ask the carrier whether 166 in³/lb or 6,000 cm³/kg applies — the same box bills lighter and the calculator lets you compare.
- Round up before you calculate. Every major carrier rounds each dimension up to the next whole inch or centimeter and billable weight up to the next pound or kilogram[shopify-dim-weight]. A box measured as 10.2 × 8.1 × 6.0 in should be entered as 11 × 9 × 6 in (27.9 × 22.9 × 15.2 cm → 28 × 23 × 16 cm).
- Weigh packed, not product. The 3.2 lb (1.45 kg) sneaker itself becomes 3.8 lb (1.72 kg) once the box, tissue, and mailer are added. Scale weight must include all packaging — otherwise dimensional weight will appear to dominate even when actual weight would have won.
- Estimate, not a quote. Real rates are zone-based tables that vary by origin ZIP/postcode, destination ZIP/postcode, service (ground, air, priority), and daily surcharges[usps-dmm-notice123]. The calculator's linear economy/express range is for comparison of packaging choices, not for checkout pricing — confirm with USPS, UPS, FedEx, DHL, Royal Mail, La Poste, or your local carrier's current price list for the lane you are shipping[usps-priority].
- Divisor assumption. The default 139 / 5,000 reflects the most common US domestic and IATA international divisors[wikipedia-dim-weight][iata-cargo-manual]. Some lanes use 166 / 6,000; freight and less-than-truckload (LTL) use entirely different density tables[bowersox-logistics]. Enter the divisor your carrier quotes if it differs.
- No service for dangerous goods, oversize, or non-rectangular parcels. Cylinders, tubes, and poly mailers have their own girth and dimensional rules (e.g., USPS dimensional weight for large tubes uses length × girth²). The calculator assumes a rectangular box.
- Surcharges and fees excluded. Fuel surcharge, residential surcharge, Saturday delivery, signature, insurance, and customs duties and taxes for international shipments are excluded[usps-dmm-notice123]. For cross-border shipments, duties depend on product classification and declared value, not on dimensional weight.
- Currency is illustrative. The cost range is shown in USD in this estimate. If you price in EUR, GBP, INR, or any other currency, interpret the range as local-currency-per-weight-unit and replace the per-pound rate with your carrier's local per-kilogram rate — the billable weight itself does not change with currency[nist-units].
- Discrete rounding not modeled per carrier. Some carriers apply cubic rounding to the nearest half-pound or half-kilogram; the calculator rounds continuously and may differ by one unit from the carrier's rounding.
- ❓ What is dimensional weight and why do carriers use it?
- ✅ Dimensional (volumetric) weight converts a parcel's volume to a weight-equivalent. Carriers bill the greater of actual scale weight and dimensional weight because vehicles are limited by both weight and space. The formula is volume divided by a divisor — 139 cubic inches per pound in the US or 5,000 cubic centimeters per kilogram internationally.
- ❓ What divisor should I use — 139 or 166, 5,000 or 6,000?
- ✅ Use 139 in³/lb (5,000 cm³/kg) for most US domestic FedEx/UPS and IATA international air shipments. Use 166 in³/lb or 6,000 cm³/kg if your carrier or lane specifies it — typically USPS Ground Advantage over certain cubic thresholds or some European road freight tables. The same box bills about 16–17 percent lighter with the larger divisor.

- ✅ Not if the box is bulky. A 2 lb parcel in a 12×10×8 inch box bills as 6.9 lb dimensional weight, so removing 0.5 lb of contents does not lower the billable weight at all — only a smaller box does.

- ❓ Can I use this for freight, pallets, or tubes?
- ✅ No. Freight and LTL use density-based classes, cylinders and tubes use girth formulas, and pallets have their own stacking rules. This calculator is for rectangular parcels shipped via parcel carriers.
- ❓ Why is my carrier's dimensional weight different by a pound or kilogram?
- ✅ Small differences come from rounding — carriers round dimensions and billable weight up to the next whole unit, and some round to half-units. The formula itself is identical; carrier rounding can shift the result by one unit.
