The quilt top area is 60 x 80 = 4,800 square inches. Each yard of 42-inch fabric covers 42 x 36 = 1,512 square inches, so the top needs 4,800 / 1,512 = 3.17 yards. Rounded up to the nearest eighth, you buy 3 1/4 yards of top fabric.

The backing needs 4 inches of overage per side, so the backing piece is 68 by 88 inches. Because 68 inches is wider than a single 42-inch fabric width, you need two widths of fabric. Two widths by 88 inches is 176 inches of fabric, which is 176 / 36 = 4.89 yards, rounded to 5 yards of backing. How Yardage Is Calculated

The quilt top fabric is the simplest case. The top area is QW × QL, and the yardage is that area divided by the area of one yard:

The binding is a continuous strip around the perimeter, with extra allowance E for corners, joins, and the final seam. The number of strips is the total strip length divided by the usable fabric width, rounded up, and each strip is as wide as your chosen binding width B:

Finally, the batting is simply the top size plus 4 inches on every side (8 inches on each dimension) so that it matches the backing:

Example: Crib Quilt on 42-Inch Fabric

A crib quilt finishes at 45 by 60 inches. The top area is 2,700 square inches, which at 1,512 square inches per yard is 1.79 yards, rounded to 1 7/8 yards of top fabric. The backing is 53 by 68 inches, which fits in a single 42-inch width, so the backing is 68 inches or 1.89 yards, rounded to 2 yards. Top fabric yardage for a 60 x 80 inch quilt declines as usable fabric width increases. Doubling the fabric width from 36 to 108 inches cuts the top fabric required by two thirds, which is why 108-inch wide backing fabric is so popular for large quilts.

Tips for Buying Quilt Fabric

The yardage figures are based on the raw area the fabric must cover, not on the layout of actual pattern pieces.
