Swim Pace Calculator
A runner measures pace in minutes per mile or per kilometer — a single, continuous effort over ground that does not move. A swimmer measures pace in minutes and seconds per 100 meters or per 100 yards, because the medium changes everything[wikipedia-swimming]. Water is 800 times denser than air, so speed comes from technique as much as fitness; turns at the wall add or subtract seconds depending on whether the pool is 25 meters (m), 50 m, or 25 yards (yd)[world-aquatics-rules]; and the clock on the wall reads in a repeating interval cycle (e.g., ":30 send-off") rather than a single elapsed time.
The standard race distances tell the story of the sport: Olympic finals are contested in a 50 m long-course pool over 50 m, 100 m, 200 m, 400 m, 800 m, and 1500 m[olympics-swimming-2024], while age-group and masters meets in the United States often run in 25 yd short-course pools over 25 yd, 50 yd, 100 yd, 200 yd, 500 yd, and 1650 yd[usms-home]. A pace of 1:30 per 100 yd is not the same as 1:30 per 100 m — the meter is 8.56% longer than the yard (1 yd = 0.9144 m)[nist-units], so the same effort yields different times. Without converting, a swimmer who trains in yards and races in meters will misjudge every interval.
This calculator translates any swim — 800 yd in 12:00, 1500 m in 22:30, 32 lengths of a 25 m pool — into pace per 100 m, per 100 yd, per 100 m pace in yards terms, and speed in both m/s and yd/s. It accepts both imperial and metric inputs so a swimmer in Berlin counting meters and a swimmer in Ohio counting yards can use the same tool without hand conversion[nist-units]. The result updates in both systems simultaneously, so you can give a coach a 1:38 per 100 m split in Europe and a 1:30 per 100 yd split at a masters meet in the United States from the same swim without recalculating. The calculator needs distance, total time, and the distance unit you swam in. Optional pool length helps with interval context but does not change the pace math.
Example 1 — short-course yards: 500 yd in 7:30.
- Choose distance unit. Select Yards (yd) — the pool was 25 yd[usms-home].
- Enter distance. Type
500(the event distance). The calculator shows the metric equivalent: 500 yd = 457.2 m (500 × 0.9144)[nist-units]. - Enter time. Type minutes

Example 2 — long-course meters: 1500 m in 22:30.

Example 3 — mixed: 1000 m in 18:00, want pace per 100 yd for a yards-based squad.
Distance 1000 m, time 18:00 (1,080 s). Pace per 100 m = 1:48 (108 s), per 100 yd = 1:38.7 (98.75 s). The 8.56% difference is exactly the yard-meter conversion — the same swim is 9.25 seconds faster per 100 when expressed in yards.
Pool length tip: If you enter pool length (25 m, 50 m, 25 yd), the calculator also reports number of lengths and the interval send-off that holds the pace (e.g., 1:30 per 100 yd = 0:45 per 50 yd, so a set of 8×50 on 1:00 leaves 15 s rest).
Swim pace is time divided by distance, scaled to a standard 100-unit block. The only subtlety is the yard-meter conversion[nist-units].
Let:

Speed is the inverse:
with v in yd/s if D was in yards, or m/s if D was in meters; the other follows as v_yd = v_m / 0.9144.
Worked Step-Through (500 yd in 7:30)
For the reverse check, a 1:30 per 100 m swimmer holds 90 s per 100 m → 82.3 s per 100 yd (90 × 0.9144), so 500 yd would be 5 × 82.3 = 411.5 s = 6:51.5 — about 38 seconds faster than the 7:30 yards-pace swimmer over the same yard distance, exactly because the meter is longer.
Pace per 100 yd vs per 100 m and the equivalent interval send-offs for a common set (8×50). All paces use the exact factor 1 yd = 0.9144 m[nist-units]. World-class 1500 m Olympic finalists hold about 55–58 s per 100 m[olympics-swimming-2024]; a masters fitness swimmer often holds 1:40–2:00.

The 8.6% gap is constant: every row's per-100-m time is per-100-yd × 1.0936. A swimmer who knows one can instantly estimate the other. For interval training, halve the per-100 time for a 50 send-off — 1:30 per 100 yd = 0:45 per 50 yd, so holding 8×50 on 1:00 gives 15 s rest[wikipedia-swimming].

Know your pool. 25 yd, 25 m, and 50 m are all standard[world-aquatics-rules]. A 500 in a 25 yd pool is 20 lengths; in a 25 m pool it is 457.2 m, not 500 m — counting lengths without converting misstates pace by 8.6%.

Always state the unit with the pace. "1:30 pace" is meaningless without "per 100 yd" or "per 100 m". Log both: 1:30/100 yd (1:38/100 m) so a coach in any system can read it.

Use the pace clock, not just the stopwatch. Leave on the top or on a round number (e.g., :00, :30) and read the clock on the wall — the interval tells you rest without extra math[usms-home].

Convert before comparing. A 20:00 1500 m (1:20/100 m) is faster than 19:30 1650 yd (1:11/100 yd = 1:17/100 m) even though 19:30 looks quicker — different distances, different units[nist-units].

Track speed as well as pace. Pace (time per 100) is intuitive for intervals; speed (yd/s or m/s) is better for comparing strokes and for estimating VO2 Max and calorie burn with the Calories Burned Calculator.

Log the course with the time. A 1:30 per 100 yd set means something different in a 25 yd pool versus a 25 m pool versus open water. Note "25 yd SCY", "25 m SCM", or "50 m LCM" next to the pace so the next session's comparison is apples-to-apples — especially when traveling between facilities that use different pool lengths.
- No turn or start adjustment. The calculator divides total time evenly. In reality, starts and turns are faster than mid-pool swimming, so a 50 m pool (fewer turns) yields a slightly faster pace than a 25 m pool for the same effort. For elite analysis, use dedicated race-analysis splits[world-aquatics-rules].
- Stroke matters. Freestyle paces are 10–20% faster than breaststroke or butterfly at the same effort[wikipedia-swimming]. The calculator does not adjust for stroke — log the stroke with the pace.
- Open water vs pool. Open water has no walls, no lane lines, and added navigation and current effects. Pool pace does not translate directly to open-water pace[wikipedia-swimming].
- Pace is an average. The calculator reports average pace. Negative-split or interval sets have variable pace within the set; the average hides that variation.
- Yard-meter conversion is exact for distance, not for effort. 1 yd = 0.9144 m is exact[nist-units], but swimming 100 m costs slightly more than 109.36 yd due to the extra distance and turns — treat converted paces as equivalent, not identical.
