Why Estimate Boards and Joists?
Decking is sold by the board, and joists by length, so knowing both counts prevents shortfalls that stall the build and surplus you must return. Joist count also drives hanger, beam, and post requirements.
What Affects the Count?
Board count depends on deck width (how many board rows fit), board length, and waste from cuts and trimming. Joist count depends on deck length and joist spacing (typically 16 in on center). This calculator assumes perpendicular boards running across the width.
Board orientation and length
Decking usually runs perpendicular to the joists, so a board's length spans the deck width while rows repeat across the length. A 5.5 in (nominal 6 in) board is the common choice; 3.5 in (nominal 4 in) deck boards give a tighter, more traditional look but need about 57% more rows. Longer boards mean fewer end joints but the same total linear feet. Always buy a length at least as long as the span, or plan a staggered layout with butt joints over a joist.

Worked Example 1: A 12 ft × 10 ft Deck
Area = 120 ft². Board rows across the 10 ft width = 10 / (5.5/12) ≈ 21.8 → 22 rows. Boards (8 ft) per row across the 12 ft length = 12 / 8 = 1.5 → about 2 per row. Total boards ≈ 22 × 1.5 × 1.10 (waste) ≈ 36. The calculator computes this directly. Joists = 12 / (16/12) + 1 = 9 + 1 = 10 joists.
Worked Example 2: A 16 ft × 14 ft Deck
Larger area needs proportionally more boards; joists = 16 / 1.333 + 1 = 13.
Edge Cases
- Zero dimension → no result.
- Wider boards → fewer rows, fewer boards.
- Closer joist spacing → more joists.
- Longer boards → fewer pieces for the same area.
- Non-rectangular decks → section and sum.
Worked Example 3: A 20 ft × 16 ft Deck With 5.5 in Boards
Area = 320 ft². Rows across 16 ft = 16 / 0.458 ≈ 35. Boards per row across 20 ft at 8 ft length = 2.5 → 3. Total ≈ 35 × 3 × 1.10 = 116 boards. Joists at 16 in over 20 ft = ceil(20/1.333)+1 = 16.
Worked Example 4: Tight 4 in Boards
The same 320 ft² deck with nominal 4 in boards (3.5 in actual, 0.292 ft rows) needs 16 / 0.292 ≈ 55 rows — about 57% more rows than 6 in boards, so roughly 181 boards before waste. Board width is the biggest lever on board count.
Staggering butt joints
When boards are shorter than the deck, place end joints on alternating joists and keep them at least two joists apart. The calculator counts pieces; lay them out so joints never line up in a row.
Worked Example 5: A 12 ft × 12 ft Deck, 4 in Boards
Area = 144 ft². Rows across 12 ft with 3.5 in (nominal 4 in) boards = 12 / 0.292 ≈ 41. Boards per row across 12 ft at 8 ft length = 1.5 → 2. Total ≈ 41 × 2 × 1.10 = 90 boards. The narrower board nearly doubles the rows versus a 6 in board on the same deck.
Worked Example 6: A 24 ft × 16 ft Deck at 24 in Joist Spacing
Area = 384 ft². Rows = 16 / 0.458 ≈ 35. Boards per row at 8 ft over 24 ft = 3. Total ≈ 35 × 3 × 1.10 = 116. Joists at 24 in over 24 ft = ceil(24/2) + 1 = 13. Wider spacing saves four joists versus 16 in (19), at the cost of needing 2× decking.
Worked Example 7: A 10 ft × 12 ft Deck With 2×6 Decking
A 2×6 board is 5.5 in, same as a 1×6, so rows across 12 ft = 26. Boards per row across 10 ft at 12 ft length = 1, so 26 × 1 × 1.10 = 29 boards. The thicker 2× stock lets you use 24 in joist spacing, trading board count for fewer joists.
Worked Example 8: A 14 ft × 14 ft Square Deck, 4 in Boards
Area = 196 ft². Rows across 14 ft with 3.5 in boards = 14 / 0.292 ≈ 48. Boards per row across 14 ft at 8 ft = 1.75 → 2. Total ≈ 48 × 2 × 1.10 = 106 boards. The narrow board nearly doubles rows versus a 6 in board on the same footprint.
Worked Example 9: A 30 ft × 12 ft Long Deck at 16 in Spacing
Area = 360 ft². Rows across 12 ft = 26. Boards per row across 30 ft at 16 ft length = 1.875 → 2. Total ≈ 26 × 2 × 1.10 = 57. Joists at 16 in over 30 ft = ceil(30/1.333)+1 = 24. Long, narrow decks need many joists but few board rows.
Decking linear feet vs board count
A 120 ft² deck with 22 rows of 12 ft boards (allowing waste) is 22 × 12 = 264 linear ft of decking. If you buy 8 ft boards, that is 33 pieces; if you buy 12 ft boards, 22 pieces. The linear feet are the same, but longer boards mean fewer butt joints to stagger.
Estimating posts and beams
Posts sit at the beam points, typically every 6–8 ft along the perimeter. A 16 ft deck might need 4 corner posts plus mid posts, with beams sized to span between them. The calculator covers decking and joists; budget posts and beams from the deck perimeter and span tables.

Should I gap the decking for drainage?
Yes — leave a 1/8 to 3/16 in gap between boards so rain drains and the wood can swell without buckling. The gap runs along each row, not across it, so it does not change the row count; just keep it consistent so the field reads evenly from the ground.
How do I estimate the ledger and rim?
The ledger bolts to the house and a double rim caps the open end. A 12 ft deck needs a 12 ft ledger and a doubled 12 ft rim (24 ft of 2× stock); add these to the joist takeoff. The calculator covers field joists only, so budget the rim and ledger from the deck length.
What about a deck with a 45-degree corner?
A clipped or 45-degree corner removes a triangle of decking and a few joists from that corner. Estimate the full rectangle, then subtract the missing triangle's boards and the joists that would have crossed it. The waste margin usually absorbs the small difference, but a large cut corner should be subtracted explicitly.
How do I plan for hidden vs surface fasteners?
Hidden clip systems need one clip per board per joist plus a start clip, while face-screwing needs two screws per board per joist. A 320 ft² deck with 16 joists and 35 rows is roughly 1,120 screws or about 560 clips; buy clips or screws separately from the board count and pad by 10%.
Does the deck height change the lumber?
Height sets post length and beam size, not the decking or joist count. A tall deck just needs longer 6×6 posts and a beam sized to the span; the board and joist takeoff from the calculator stays the same regardless of how high the deck sits.
How do I estimate a pergola on top of the deck?
A pergola adds posts (often 6×6), beams, and rafters above the deck frame. Those are separate linear-foot and board-foot takeoffs; the decking and joist counts from the calculator are unaffected. Size the pergola members by the span between its posts, not by the deck dimensions.
