How to Use This Calculator

If you do not have a bill handy, a typical U.S. household uses around 900 kWh per month, but this varies significantly by region, home size, and season. Next, enter your monthly natural gas usage in therms. Again, your gas bill will show this figure. If you heat with oil rather than natural gas, you can optionally enter your monthly heating oil usage in gallons. Homes that use propane or other heating fuels can approximate using the natural gas input.

Move to the Transportation section. Enter your annual vehicle mileage in miles and your car's fuel economy in miles per gallon. If you drive multiple vehicles, enter the combined annual mileage and average fuel economy. You can find your car's EPA-rated fuel economy at fueleconomy.gov, or calculate your actual fuel economy by dividing miles driven by gallons purchased over several fill-ups. The calculator uses emission factors derived from EPA and EIA data to convert your consumption into CO₂ equivalent emissions. The primary factors used are:

  • U.S. average electricity: 0.85 lbs CO₂ per kWh (national average grid mix)
  • Natural gas: 11.7 lbs CO₂ per therm
  • Heating oil: 22.4 lbs CO₂ per gallon
  • Gasoline: 19.6 lbs CO₂ per gallon consumed
  • Short flight (under 3 hours): 0.6 tons CO₂ per flight per passenger
  • Long flight (3+ hours): 2.5 tons CO₂ per flight per passenger
