Worked Example

- Interior dimensions (estimated subtracting 0.5 in per side): 29 × 11 = 319 sq in.
- Volume: 319 × 2 = 638 cubic inches.
- Convert to cubic feet: 638 / 1728 = 0.37 cu ft.
- Weight at 100 lb/cu ft: 0.37 × 100 = 37 lbs.
- Round up to retail bags: 2 × 20 lb bags = 40 lbs of gravel.
Buying only one 20 lb bag (a common mistake at the pet store) would give you only 0.62 cu ft / 2 in of depth = 1.07 inch actual layer — barely acceptable for bare-bottom fish-only, but inadequate for the planted community the buyer actually intends.

Where:

The "Bags to Buy" output rounds the weight up to the nearest 20 lb retail bag, since substrate is almost always sold in 5, 10, 20, and occasionally 25 lb quantities. Round up — you can always use spare substrate in another tank or for a quarantine setup later.
Always round up to the next bag size, never down. A small surplus of substrate is stored easily and useful later for a quarantine or hospital tank.
